You should always tell someone you trust were your going and never use your phone for stuff like MXit and Facebook when your on the road so you can have a full battery when your in an accident. Always put your purse in the COBOL and never follow strangers becuase they can mislead you. I hope this helpes.

Update:
O sorry i live in South Africa so we cal it that its the glove compartment in your car at the passengers seat. That little box you can open. Its very useful becuase then people cant see your money

I thought your other answer was funny but not too practical. Where are you going? Do you have a cell phone? If so take it. Have enough money and don't put it all in one place. Have a copy of your passport and your credit card in a safe place. Know the # to call if either get lost. Tell somebody your itinerary. Have important phone numbers with you of people you can call if you need them. don't have all your money and important stuff in a purse with a long strap. Get a fanny pack, wear it in front and under your shirt. Beware of people that get too close or bump into you. I have traveled alone many times and never had any problem. It's really not that bad. Just be aware of your surroundings.

Tell someone where you are going, what time you should be arriving. Carry a flashlight, keep your money or at least some of it in a place that it can't be stolen-think front pant pocket or if wearing a bra or undershirt pin some in it for emergencies. Keep a working cell phone with you. If possible make sure the cell phone has GPS on it and if you are not sure of someplace or something just feels hinky don't go there or talk to the person that is making you feel weird.
