Based on what I’ve read, Japan is a relatively safe city, but it doesn’t hurt to be careful especially when travelling alone at night. It is mentioned that you may get groped on the subway (this is also a concern of mine as I will be going to Tokyo this April). If you shout “chikan” which means pervert, you may get some help from fellow passengers. This is a true story: a couple of years ago, a friend’s sister was at a mall in Tokyo with her girlfriends. The latter were inside a shop and she was waiting for them outside. Someone grabbed her butt from behind and then ran away … Just be careful, ok?

Tokyo/Japan is already extremely safe. I lived there for 10 years and not a single time did I feel nervous. There are people EVERYWHERE you go!

Enjoy and feel free to relax. People there are all very helpful in case you need help with anything. And the police there are extremely kind and helpful too. I was speeding once and was stopped, asked to drive more safely and then let go.

1 learn basic japanese language
2 bring japanese dictionary
if u dont, hire translator or your friends that fluent in japanese.

♥The best safety tip I can give you is to use common sense. Don’t go into dark areas alone. Stay in well populated areas so that you can ask for help or directions if you need it. There is usually always a “Koban” = Police box, on most streets if you have trouble. Most restaurants have fake food displays and picture menus, so it’s easy to order. Most attractions have English pamphlets and info, you just have to ask for it. Keep your cards, cash, travelers checks and passport close at hand. If you worry about losing personal things, put a small label on them identifying them as yours in case it’s lost. I lost my wallet twice and got it back both times with all my money and cards. Japan is generally safe. Just use regular caution. I have never experienced sexual harassment. If people, men or women look at you, it’s because you’re a. a foreigner and b. they’re curious, just looking. Occasionally you will see drunk business men on the train or road, just avoid them. Keep a memo with the name and address of the place you are staying in case you get lost or want to take a cab. Many people speak a little English so relax and enjoy Tokyo!♥

Tokyo is extremely safe. Japan is one of the safe-est countries in the world. They have one of the lowest homicide rates. There may be some petty crime such as pick pocketing, but there is extremely low violent crimes. As for safety tips… use common sense. Don’t put yourself in a situation where you are uncomfortable. When in trouble or lost, just ask for help. Japanese are generally helpful.

As for sexual harassment… it’s more chauvanism than harassment. Japan is still a very male dominated society. The men are considered and act as the superior sex. You’ll see many men behaving like chauvenists. Part of the culture. They won’t be forward and harass you.

dont drive in the green lane that is for busses only. Im not kidding my friend when there last year and got pulled over for driving in the green lane.
