Most of the crime is concentrated in the ghetto neighborhoods, which are pretty far from where most tourists venture, and is associated with illegal narcotics. Otherwise, just use street smarts, as you would in any large metropolitan area: don't flash large quantities of cash in public, secure handbags, keep wallets firmly in pockets, and don't walk down empty streets late at night.
