Any safety tips for a couple traveling to DC in late December?

Question by fan1906: Any safety tips for a couple traveling to DC in late December?
My boyfriend and I would like to travel to Washington DC in late December. However now that I’ve searched a bit over the internet there seems to be a lot of reports of crimes in the area and I was wondering if I should reconsider my destination of choice. We would probably be staying at the Renaissance Downtown hotel and would mostly visit the National Mall and museums. Do you have any safety tips or suggestions for us?

DC is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country. There are plenty of white people here; don’t worry, you’ll be fine.

  1. DON W says:

As long as you stick to the tourist areas, you’ll be fine. Most of the crime is concentrated in the ghetto neighborhoods, which are pretty far from where most tourists venture, and is associated with illegal narcotics. Otherwise, just use street smarts, as you would in any large metropolitan area: don’t flash large quantities of cash in public, secure handbags, keep wallets firmly in pockets, and don’t walk down empty streets late at night.

    yes is so safety

You are far more likely to die on your drive to DC (or to the airport) than you are to be a victim of some kind of crime while in DC.

    Some good answers already.

Just don’t wander far from the National Mall and vicinity. The entire Metro subway system is safe. And just about all of the touristy places like Arlington Cemetery.
